Eculizumab

Summary

Eculizumab is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits terminal complement activation by binding to complement protein C5. It is indicated for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemaglobinuria to reduce hemolysis.

This drug is sold under the tradename "Soliris" and is produced by Alexion pharmaceuticals. Prescribing information states that eculizumab is contraindicated in patients with unresolved Neisseria meningitidis infection or in patients who have not been vaccinated against Neisseria meningitidis. Caution is advised in patients with any systemic infection.
